EAThe Costa Rican Highlands

The Monteverde Cloud Forest and nearby Santa Elena Reserve, at an altitude of over 4000 feet, support six distinct ecological communities of plants and animals with over 2000 plant species and more than 320 species of birds. Monteverde is home to the resplendent QUETZAL, with its metallic green feathers and golden highlights, to the GOLDEN TOAD, unique to this area, and to a myriad of breathtakingly beautiful butterflies.

White-faced MonkeyLocated north of Monteverde, the biological area of Arenal comprises the Arenal and Sarapiqui Rivers, Lake Arenal, and Arenal Volcano National Park with nearby Tabacon Hot Springs Resort (right). Time should be allowed for exploring the varied ecosystems created by the diverse micro-climates ranging from cloud forest to riparian forest. A full day should also be allotted to visit Cano Negro National Park, a vast wetlands north of Arenal, teeming with wildlife such as the White-faced capuchin monkey (left). The wetlands of Cano Negro are considered one of the most diverse ecosystems in Costa Rica.
